Meg White

Meg White isn't your typical rock star. The 32-year-old native of Detroit, Michigan, is almost painfully shy, seemingly doing whatever she can to avoid attention. Quiet and demure, Meg rarely grants interviews or even speaks above a whisper. But as one half of The White Stripes, she's become an inspiration to countless young female musicians.

Meg's musical career began completely by accident in 1997. Her husband Jack was playing his guitar one day when Meg decided to join him on the drums. She had no musical background whatsoever, and her drumming was almost child-like. But her overly simplistic style was a perfect compliment to Jack's thrashing guitar chords, creating one of the most dynamic duos in music history.

While Meg and Jack's marriage would last only a few years, with the couple divorcing in 2000, their musical partnership continues to this day. They've produced six albums and a string of alternative rock hits, such as "Fell in Love with a Girl," "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground," "Seven Nation Army," and "The Hardest Button to Button."

Jack has emerged as the best guitarist of his generation, lifting The White Stripes into the pantheon of legendary bands. Yet Meg's pounding beats provide the backbone for the twosome's unique sound. She's as thunderous on stage as she is quiet off it, even overcoming her shyness long enough to sing a handful of songs over the years.

Meg White proves yet again there's beauty in simplicity.
